Over the years, I have gone to many estate auctions, flea markets, yard sales, thrift shops and found many “treasures.” For a time I collected vintage costume jewelry and I became interested in past fashion trends. As a result, when I see an old jewelry box filled with shiny things, I automatically bid, rummage, look and often purchase.
One of my favorite things is to purchase the whole jewelry box with everything in it. I anxiously take it home and look at each item in the box. I find myself wondering about the person who collected the pieces and what the story was behind each piece.
“Was this a gift?” “What event did she wear this?” “Maybe it was a Christmas party and she wore a red gown.” “Maybe she was a flapper at a speakeasy, or a hippie at Woodstock.” “Maybe her sweetheart sent this home to her in WWII.”
It’s like a little window or glimpse into a time that once was. The fascination still exists for me as I am intrigued by other people’s lives including when they are complete strangers. Perhaps this is a muse for me to create my art.
This cuff is made from scraps of vintage textiles, trims, beads, charms, pins, from some of my “jewelry box discoveries.” I assembled them into a collage that you too can enjoy and wonder about the original owners of each piece and the memories that were made when they wore them, and create new memories of your own.
This cuff is 6 inches in width, and 8 ½ inches around. It is lined with soft corduroy that has a mod print from the ‘70s. It closes with two magnetic clasps to make it easy for you to put it on.
